Activities
Leadership in International Affairs & Civic Engagement
Our unparalleled leadership development programs integrate sophisticated content, youth development strategies, experiential learning, and opportunities to work with prominent experts in the fields of international affairs, public policy and human rights/social activism.
Power of Citizenry Leadership Program: Global Kids' flagship program develops 500+ Global Kids Leaders annually. Youth explore such issues as global health, poverty, children's rights, sustainability, discrimination, and human rights. Field trips, guest speakers, mentoring, and hands-on service projects supplement the workshops. The program equips youth with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in school and participate in shaping international and public policies in a complex 21st century world. Young Leaders on the Rise, an extension of POC, targets 9th graders to help them transition to high school and stay on track for credit accumulation.
Human Rights Activist Project: The Human Rights Activist Project (HRAP) addresses the current absence of youth voices in the public policy decision-making process and trains youth to become human rights activists. Students identify and research human rights issues and develop a campaign for social change, which includes public outreach, direct action, media strategies, meeting with elected officials, and networking with other organizers. Past HRAP campaigns have included work on Climate Change, the DREAM Act, the genocide in Darfur, the Dignity for All Students Act, NYPD Stop and Frisk Policy, and food justice/child nutrition.
Council on Foreign Relations Partnership: Since forging its partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations in 1997, GK Leaders have been given unique access to foreign policy experts, deliberating with them on such issues as peace and security, energy, the rise of China, homeland security, and democracy and human rights. This exceptional partnership includes monthly roundtables and an intensive summer institute, U.S. in the World.
