At City Year, we’re working to bridge the gap in high-poverty communities between the support that students actually need, and what their schools are designed and resourced to provide.

AmeriCorps members are a diverse group of educated, young adults (aged 18-25) who serve as full-time interns for 11 months in City Year's partner schools to provide extra support for students, teachers, and the school. They support their students while serving as a "near-peer" role model.

AmeriCorps members provide the following services to students on a day-to-day basis:
one on one or group tutoring before, during and after school
run afterschool clubs and service projects
take attendance and call late or absent students
organize and lead activities, celebrations and events for the school

We pay AmeriCorps members in the form of a stipend, which varies by city based on cost of living, but it will be at least $12,100 per service year, plus health insurance benefits. Along with a living stipend, AmeriCorps members will also get some other financial aid that can help them in their life after City Year, like a $5,645 Segal Education Award that can be used toward a graduate or undergraduate degree, or toward federal loans or future graduate school loans.
