Recreational Sports
- 78th Precinct Youth Council
Mission
We are a non-profit youth sports organization that provides Brooklyn children from kindergarten through high school with the opportunity to develop leadership abilities, team skills, and personal discipline.
Activities
Program offers recreation in baseball, softball, flag football, basketball. It also offers sports internships
RECREATIONAL BASEBALL & SOFTBALL
Co-ed boys and girls ages 4-17, Girls Softball ages 8-15. The season usually begins the first weekend of April and ends Father’s Day weekend in June. There are no tryouts or evaluations for the recreational program. As long as we have enough coaches, all players who register on time will be placed on a team. Players are given the option to choose a specific recreation team when registering.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Our philosophy is to balance the teams as best we can. Players are therefore evaluated (in August) and rated, and then chosen to a team by the coaches at a draft. As a recreational league, our focus is on learning and having fun. With that in mind, we strive to have our coaches provide equal playing time to all players. There are four divisions: NFC-9 & 10 year olds (co-ed), AFC-11 & 12 year olds (boys only), NFL-13 & 14 year olds (boys only), and XFL-15 & 16 year olds (boys only). Our 8 game regular season commences mid-September and runs through early November.
BASKETBALL
78PYC basketball is divided into three programs; recreation (Co-ed 9-17 years old & Girls 9-14 years old), clinics, and travel. The season begins in early December and lasts through March. In our Co-ed (mostly boys) and Girls Recreational Divisions we focus on creating balanced competition by evaluating all players and then balancing the skill levels on the teams so that everyone has an equal chance of winning. This is recreational basketball, so the focus is on learning and having fun, not the win-loss record.
SPORTS INTERNSHIPS
For teens considering a future in sports—or just looking for part-time work and community service opportunities — we now offer hands-on sports management experience for reliable, responsible teenagers 13 and older. Volunteer and paid jobs are available throughout the year (to support our baseball, basketball, and flag football programs), with eligibility based on age, experience, and commitment to the program.
