Teen Career Connection
During the months of July and August, the participants complete an eight-week internship program. The teens will spend the first week and a half at the West Side Y training to develop the skills necessary to perform their jobs in a professional manner. Examples of the types of seminar-style sessions they participate in will include: CONFLICT RESOLUTION, DRESSING FOR SUCCESS, SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE WORKPLACE, and PUBLIC SPEAKING. During this training period, the teens are taken on a shopping outing to help them select the proper wardrobe for their jobs.
Y staff members match the teens with the participating host sites based on their interests and qualifications. We also provide each teen with an adult mentor that checks in with the student throughout the training and placement. There are mentor and mentee team-building outings planned during the eight week program which have included fun activities such as a Mets game, karaoke night, and bowling.
For the next six weeks the teens spend at least 35 hours per week in their jobs. They are expected to report back to the Y each week with reflection assignments. West Side Y staff visits each site during the internship period to get feedback from the teens' supervisor. Host sites are also asked to complete a simple evaluation for each participant.
The summer culminates with Portfolio Night where each of the teens is required to prepare a two to three minute overview of their internship experience. Participating host sites, mentors, and families are invited to the event to see first-hand the incredible experiences that the teens had through the Teen Career Connection program.
